Nancy Sinatra - Boots: Greatest Hits

by Stephen Cook
Having once claimed to be the first stateside singer to don London's mod, Carnaby Street threads, Nancy Sinatra became America's answer to both Twiggy and Petula Clark, thanks to U.S. chart-toppers like "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "Sugar Town," and "So Long, Babe." Her sheepish pipes unable to scale the Olympian heights visited by father Frank, Nancy opted for a pop a-go-go sound with the help of Duane Eddy production veterans Lee Hazlewood and Billy Strange. Their brooding country backdrops รก la Johnny Cash and psychedelic-light mix of fuzz guitars, tambourines, and snappy brass charts proved the perfect fit for Sinatra's alluring delivery and playful dominatrix image. This Rhino collection includes all the big hits, with the focus being more on the pop side of things than on more idiosyncratic fare like Sinatra's many duets with Hazlewood. Along with her classic "Somethin' Stupid" pairing with her father and the Bond theme "You Only Live Twice," other highlights include "Tony Rome," "Friday's Child," and "100 Years." A fine primer for the Nancy Sinatra newcomer. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
